Hotel History
The Kimpton Gray Hotel is housed in Chicago's historic New York Life Insurance Building, originally built in 1894 and designed by William Le Baron Jenney, one of the pioneers of steel-frame skyscraper construction. After years of neglect and near demolition, Kimpton acquired the building in 2014 and transformed it into a boutique hotel, preserving its architectural integrity and Georgia Gray marble, which gave the hotel its name. The project was recognized for its preservation efforts, incorporating historic elements like original marble and bronze doors into the modern hotel design.
