Hotel History

Originally constructed in 1923 as the Bon Marché department store, the building was designed by architect W.L. Stoddart, who also designed the Battery Park Hotel and Vanderbilt Hotel. The Bon Marché, meaning 'the good market' in French, was Asheville's first high-end department store, catering to well-to-do tourists who traveled to Asheville by train for the therapeutic effects of its fresh mountain air. In 1937, the store was renamed Ivey’s and continued operations until 1975. After significant renovations, the building was transformed into the Haywood Park Hotel, which opened its doors in 1985. Throughout its history, the hotel has hosted numerous notable guests, including authors F. Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe, and musicians like Louis Armstrong.
